I typically always carry three combos on the tube and mix and match between the following choices depending on the technique & area I will be fishing.

reels: lews tournament pro speed spool in 5:1 with 30# braid (leaders vary), lews tournament pro speed spool in 7:1 with 8# izorline xxx and a Calcutta 200te gt with 30# braid & 15# fluoro

Rods: all wiseguy custom rods. I have a light action, medium action, heavy action and even a parabolic one for crank baits & spinner baits.

I've taken rods up to 8'-0" but my favorite is right around 6'-0" or so.

On the tube, my go to rig is a phenix ultra mbx 707 mated with a revo inshore spool straight 40lb suffix 832.

Probably not optimal for halibut head shake as it shuts off real quick, but I have pulled some big bass out of cover with this setup.  IMO the best gear is anything that your confident in!

One of my favorites setup is an M1 MX72H, 10-25lb, extra fast action paired with a Daiwa T3MX reel and 12lb Izor xxx. Also I take a little heavier one, rated 15-35, extra fast action paired with a Daiwa Type R reel and 15lb flouro. For bay fishing, I'm pretty much covered with these two setups.

They are both excellent choices, the difference is price and that is because of the components and materials used. I have an UMBX and I have several M1's in my arsenal, I like fishing all of them, they are all sensitive, light and strong when hooking fish. But for the price, you can't go wrong with an M1, it's an outstanding blank at a very good price.

Ths might sound like a sale pitch but if your looking for a price sensitive rod, check out the abu volitair!

Not on par with phenix but they get the job done. If you like the voltair, I have a brand new VOLC79-5 that I have no use.
